Law firm managers: who to look out for at London Law Expo 2015

On Tuesday 13th October, Europe’s largest conference and exhibition for the legal profession returns to London.

The renowned London Law Expo will bring together over 50 exhibitors, 50 leading presenters and 2,000 expected visitors. Four stages will host keynote presentations, panel discussions, knowledge sessions, live debates, round table sessions, exhibitions and interactive demonstrations to offer legal practice management a leading edge in today’s modern marketplace.

With a one-day event of this scale, it can be difficult to decide where to spend your time. The key is planning ahead. I’ll be attending the event with colleagues from Katchr. We’ve scoured the programme and come up with a shortlist of must-sees that we think will be of interest to law firm practice managers.

Randy-Zuckerberg

This year’s keynote speaker is Randi Zuckerberg. Sister to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Randi ran the social media pioneer’s marketing programs from 2005-2011. She is now the Founding CEO of the boutique marketing firm and production company, Zuckerberg Media. Her previous roles have included author, television producer and contributor, Emmy Award nominee, musician, actress and presenter. She is a highly sought-after speaker, and has traveled the world sharing with audiences both her personal story and her insights on technology, business and entrepreneurship.

With such a diverse background, Randi’s keynote speech will no doubt be enlightening and provide inspiration on innovating, particularly for law firm managers who are grappling with changing business models and new business development plans.

Another one to watch out for is the well-known legal consultant, Professor Stephen Mayson. An Honorary Professor of Law at University College London, Stephen is speaking on ‘How reinventing law will drive the law firm of the future’. His expert perspective will also give insights into how law firms can survive and thrive now and in the years ahead: a ‘must-see’ for law firm managers who want their practice to be one of George Bull’s “50 survivors”.

Doug-Hargrove

Continuing the focus on future growth tactics on the main stage is Doug Hargrove, Managing Director of Advanced Legal. His talk on ‘Client retention and the path to growth’ will highlight the importance of a client-focused approach and share advice on how to maximise client satisfaction to achieve repeat business and those highly-valued referrals.

In addition to the keynote speakers, the London Law Expo 2015 offers an array of presentations led by some of the most respected names within the legal and commercial worlds. There will be a wide range of sector-focused information to assist law firms in increasing their overall performance and profitability.

The London Law Expo programme covers all aspects of law firm management. Topics for the 2015 event will include:

  • Law firm and departmental management
  • Operations and practice management
  • Business growth and performance strategies
  • Sales, marketing and business development
  • Finance, investments and profitability
  • Legal IT, software, solutions and processes
  • HR, recruitment and flexible working programmes
  • Risk, compliance and new regulations
  • Pricing, project scoping and evaluation
  • Advancing alternative business structures
  • Succession planning and exit strategies
  • Law firm cyber security and hacking
  • Knowledge management
  • Technology and virtual courts and much more

Philip-Shaw

Investec’s Chief Economist Philip Shaw’s Main Stage talk on future economic trends and emerging opportunities will look ahead and give the broader perspective that all practice managers need to keep in mind when planning how their business model can adapt and grow to suit the changing needs of the market.

Richard-Burcher-220x220

Another must-see is the masterclass on ‘Profitable pricing for law firms’ by Richard Burcher, Managing Director of Valadium (UK), will focus on how to develop successful and sustainable pricing structures, described by Richard as “the final frontier” for law firms.

And last but not least, I will be speaking myself on the Crown Stage at 14.15. My 15-minute talk is on ‘Why training for a marathon is like running a law firm’. I’ll be sharing my experiences on training for a recent charity race and the insights the challenge gave me about my approach to professional endeavours.  Expect some humour as well as some inspiration!
